'I am a fan'- 2016 Olympic Games top scorer reveals what makes Super Eagles striker Boniface so special
Published: October 16, 2024
2016 Olympic Games top scorer with six goals in six matches, Nils Petersen has admitted that he is a fan of Bayer Leverkusen center forward Victor Boniface.
After putting himself in the shop window by scoring against Bayer Leverkusen in the quarterfinals of the 2022-2023 Europa League, the Black and Reds acquired Boniface from Belgian outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023 for a fee of 21.7 million euros.
The Real Saphire alumni has made a splash since arriving in Germany, playing a key role as Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.
Despite an injury he sustained while on international duty with the Super Eagles that kept him sidelined for around three months, he finished his first season at Bayer Leverkusen with spectacular figures, registering 31 goal involvements (21 goals, 10 assists) in thirty-four appearances, proving that he is an offensive all-rounder.
Only Eintracht Frankfurt's Omar Marmoush (8), Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (5), VfB Stuttgart's Ermedin Demirović (5) and FSV Mainz's Jonathan Burkardt (5) have scored more goals than Boniface (4) in the new Bundesliga season.
Nils Petersen believes that the Bayer Leverkusen star has all the qualities necessary to make a name for himself in the Bundesliga and expects him to score many more goals by the end of the season.
"I have to say that I am a fan of Victor Boniface. As an opponent, you just don't want to play against him," he told fussball.news.
When asked to reveal what makes Boniface so special, Petersen replied: "He hurts, he's fast, he can go one-on-one, he can score goals. He has everything."
Nils Petersen scored against Nigeria in the semifinals of the 2016 Olympic Games.
