'What happened is not pleasant' - Bayer Leverkusen coach provides update on Boniface after Libya ordeal
Published: October 18, 2024Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has revealed Victor Boniface's condition ahead of his side's Bundesliga clash with Eintracht Frankfurt tomorrow at the BayArena after his unpleasant experience with the Nigeria national team during the international break.
The Super Eagles were handed inhumane treatment by the Libyan authorities ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers matchday four fixture with Libya.
Boniface was one of the players who spoke about the incident, narrating how they were treated harshly by the Libyan authorities through his social media account before they were forced to return to Nigeria.
The 23-year-old fired blanks in the first leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium last Friday and was deprived of the opportunity to open his goalscoring account for the Super Eagles as the return leg could not take place.
Alonso has confirmed that the Nigerian striker has been involved in training ahead of their matchday clash with Frankfurt on Saturday afternoon.
In quotes relayed by Frankfurter Allgemeine, the Spanish tactician said: "We have spoken. What happened is not pleasant. But he has had enough time to train."
Boniface has begun the season strongly with the Black and Reds, scoring four goals and providing one assist in six outings in the Bundesliga.
Alonso will be hoping that his star striker can continue his impressive start to the campaign against Frankfurt, who sit ahead of them on the table, having accumulated 13 points, which is two more than that of the reigning German champions.
