'Not used to being in those positions' - Chelsea icon Lampard reacts to Ndidi's missed chance v Man Utd
Published: November 10, 2024
Wilfred Ndidi will set off for international duty on a low note as Leicester City were beaten for the fifth time in this season's English Premier League.
In Ruud van Nistelrooy's last game in charge as interim coach, Manchester United thrashed Leicester City 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Bruno Fernandes celebrated his 250th appearance in a Manchester United jersey by opening the scoring in the 17th minute and the Portugal midfielder was involved in the second goal at minute 38 when his header from Mazraoui's cross deflected off Victor Kristiansen and ended up in the net.
In the second half, Leicester City did what they could to get back in the game but were outplayed by Manchester United, who got a third through substitute Alejandro Garnacho's sublime effort in the 82nd minute.
At 1-0 down, the Foxes had a couple of opportunities to bring the game back to parity, Wilfred Ndidi in particular, but the Super Eagles star fluffed his lines.
In the 25th minute, Ndidi headed the ball straight at Andre Onana, he missed an easier chance three minutes later when he made a brilliant late run in behind the United defence but the Cameroon goalkeeper was alert to the danger as he came out to save the shot.
Reacting to the second big chance missed by Ndidi, Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer with 211 goals, Frank Lampard highlighted that being in those goalscoring positions is not something the Foxes number 6 is used to as he is predominantly a defensive midfielder.
When questioned about whether Ndidi could have done better, Lampard said on Premier League Productions: "I think he should. It's good play from Leicester, they are playing through the lines well which we know they can do.
"It's a good run, ball from Manchester United but he gets there. As soon as he gets that touch away he's got to move his feet quickly.
"Great timing and great pass to find him. Take a shot, you might hit it through the crowd, it might bounce over the goalkeeper's legs.
"Probably a midfielder is not used to being in those positions so much. Not sharp enough to kind of get his shot away there."
Ndidi has scored seven goals in 203 appearances in the Premier League since making his debut in the division against Chelsea on January 14, 2017.
