Super Eagles-eligible duo Tosin and Nwaneri unused substitutes as Arsenal are held by Chelsea
Published: November 10, 2024
Tosin Adarabioyo and Ethan Nwaneri were unused substitutes as Chelsea rescued a point from the jaws of defeat, playing a 1-1 draw with London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League fixture played on Sunday evening.
Having started in the hammering of Noah in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday, Tosin returned to the bench as Enzo Maresca stuck with his first-choice centre-back pairing of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana.
Mikel Arteta turned deaf ears to handing Nwaneri his full Premier League debut and didn't deem it fit to bring on the talented attacking midfielder in the fixture, making it the sixth time that he has been an unused substitute this term.
Two minutes after the half-hour mark, Chelsea old boy Kai Havertz found the net but after a VAR check, the goal was chalked off for offside by referee Michael Oliver.
Early on in the second half, Malo Gusto fell inside the Arsenal penalty area, the Chelsea players called for a penalty to be awarded but were ignored by the referee.
Gabriel Martinelli grabbed the first goal of the contest, smashing the ball home past Robert Sánchez, having received a pass from Martin Ødegaard.
In the 70th minute, Enzo Fernández picked out Pedro Neto in the central area, the Portuguese forward accelerated towards the Arsenal defence and smashed a powerful shot beyond the reach of David Raya to level the scores.
After eleven games in the Premier League, Chelsea are third in the standings, level on nineteen points with fourth-placed Arsenal.
