Done deal: Cheltenham Town loan in Brentford's Irish-Nigerian defender
Published: January 08, 2025
Through a statement on the official website, EFL League Two club Cheltenham Town have confirmed the signing of Irish-born Nigerian defender Val Adedokun, subject to EFL, FA and Premier League approval.
In search of more first-team playing opportunities, the Brentford-owned player will spend the remainder of the season on loan at The Robins.
In September, Adedokun was loaned out to Hungarian top-flight side Diósgyőri VTK, where he made three appearances.
The Dublin native has yet to make his senior debut for Brentford, although he received seven call-ups for first team games over the course of the 2023-2024 season, comprising five in the Premier League, and one each in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
A left sided defender, Adedokun captained Brentford's B team last season, demonstrating his defensive and leadership qualities as well as showing his capacity to influence the game in the attacking third.
He was honored as Brentford B Team Player of the Year thanks to his remarkable displays.
Adedokun extended his stay at the Gtech Community Stadium last year by signing a new contract that runs until at least 2026.
Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, the dual-national player said: "It feels great to be here. I’ve always wanted to play first team football, I think it’s something I really need to take the next step in my career.
"I want to play as much as I can and be available as much as I can. I want to be someone the manager can rely on and help the team push forward."
Adedokun trained for the first time with his new Cheltenham Town teammates on Wednesday ahead of a possible debut against AFC Wimbledon this coming weekend.
