No going back: Nigerian defender agrees move to Brentford subject to medical
Published: January 22, 2025
Brentford are on the brink of announcing the capture of Italian-born Nigerian defender Michael Kayode who had attracted interest from both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Sky Sports UK, the Fiorentina right-back has been scheduled to undergo a medical at Brentford on Wednesday afternoon ahead of a potential unveiling.
Fiorentina and Brentford have reached a club-to-club agreement for the transfer of the 20-year-old, who has already agreed personal terms with the Bees, paving the way for him to travel to London for a routine medical.
If he passes his medical with flying colours, Kayode will join Brentford on loan for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season, with an option to purchase him outright for a fee of £13.5 million in the summer.
The Super Eagles-eligible player has seen his first team opportunities limited this season, playing second fiddle to experienced Brazilian right-back Dodô.
He has started just six games out of a possible twenty-nine in all competitions, compared to last season, when he made thirty-one starts and registered five goal involvements across all competitions.
Kayode started his career with Juventus before he was acquired by Fiorentina in the summer of 2021.
Though eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents, Kayode has caught the attention of Italy's national team coach, Luciano Spalletti, who is considering him for a senior team invitation.
