'My dad is from Nigeria' - Crystal Palace winger confirms he is eligible to represent Super Eagles
Published: January 31, 2025
Crystal Palace winger Asher Agbinone has revealed that, in addition to his native England, he is also eligible to play for two other national teams.
The 19-year-old qualifies to represent the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father and Republic of the Congo's Red Devils through his mother.
However, the exciting forward is there for the taking as he has not been capped at international level by any of the three countries he is eligible for.
He is being tipped as a future first team player at Crystal Palace, and received fourteen call-ups for first team games in the first half of the campaign before heading to League Two club Gillingham on loan until the end of the season.
Agbinone joined Crystal Palace at U9 level, progressing through the ranks to make his Premier League debut off the bench against Nottingham Forest in October 2024.
The following month, the tri-national forward made his home debut as a substitute in a 2-0 loss to Fulham in the Premier League.
Speaking to Palace TV, Agbinone stated: "South London is a very diverse place. My mom's from Congo, my dad is from Nigeria.
"Whenever someone asks me where I am from, I'll tell them where I am from probably. I can never forget where I am from, it shaped who I am today."
Victor Moses, one of Crystal Palace's most notable academy graduates opted to commit his international future to Nigeria and was arguably the standout player for the Super Eagles in 2013 when they won the Africa Cup of Nations.
Another academy graduate George Ndah was called up to the Nigeria squad in 1999, while Ademola Ola-Adebomi trained with the Flying Eagles before the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
