U18 PL Cup: Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha scores against former club Chelsea in 5-goal thriller
Published: February 01, 2025
London-born forward of Nigerian descent, Rio Ngumoha came back to haunt his former employers, Chelsea, scoring as Liverpool came from two goals down to beat the Blues 3-2 in an U18 Premier League Cup fixture staged at Cobham Training Center on Saturday afternoon, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
There were starts for Chelsea trio of Nigerian descent Olutayo Subuloye, Landon Emenalo and Chizzy Ezenwata, while Ngumoha started for Liverpool.
Ngumoha rejected a scholarship offer from Chelsea before opting for a move to Liverpool last summer.
Signed as one for the future, he has already made his full debut for the Reds' first team, playing for 72 minutes of a 4-0 rout of Accrington Stanley in the Emirates FA Cup last month.
Chelsea appeared to have sealed the match with goals in both halves, courtesy of Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Genesis Antwi.
However, Trey Nyoni pulled one back with seven minutes left on the clock, firing the ball into the net after Bradshaw's cross into the box was only partially cleared.
In the 87th minute, Ngumoha equalized for the visitors as he skillfully maneuvered forward and maximized his shooting angle, tucking the ball past the keeper and inside the right post.
Ayman capped off the thrilling turnaround in the first minute of stoppage time, lunging to prod Sonni-Lambie’s pinpoint cross over the line.
Box-to-box midfielder Fola Onanuga entered the game as a substitute shortly after Liverpool's winning goal, while Flying Eagles hopeful Louis Enahoro-Marcus was an unused substitute.
Liverpool qualified for the semifinals of the U18 Premier League Cup thanks to their win against Chelsea.
