'He played at left CB' - Southampton coach reveals how Aribo's new role helped Saints beat Ipswich
Published: February 01, 2025
Southampton manager Ivan Juric has praised Joe Aribo for his outstanding performance in an unfamiliar role during their 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
The midfielder, who opened the scoring for the Saints, was later deployed at left centre-back due to injuries in the squad, a move Juric believes was crucial in securing the win.
"We had problems with Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jack Stephens. Today I have to say Joe Aribo was exceptional, he played at left centre-back and he played an incredible game,” Juric told Sky Sports, via the BBC after the game.
Southampton took the lead in the 21st minute when Aribo capitalized on an error from Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, calmly finishing with a first-time strike.
However, the home side responded quickly through Liam Delap, who slotted past Aaron Ramsdale after a well-timed pass from Nathan Broadhead.
With Southampton struggling defensively, they suffered further setbacks when Harwood-Bellis was forced off with an injury, and his replacement, Jack Stephens, had to leave the field just 10 minutes later.
This prompted Juric to make an unexpected tactical change, shifting Aribo into the backline.
Despite being out of his natural midfield position, Aribo adapted well, helping Southampton withstand Ipswich’s second-half pressure.
His composure in defense proved vital as the Saints held firm before Paul Onuachu secured the win with a late goal.
The victory gives Southampton only their second league win of the season, though they remain eight points adrift of safety.
However, Aribo’s impressive display at left centre-back provided a major positive for Juric, who may consider utilizing him in a defensive role again if injury concerns persist.
