Rotherham United plotting late move to sign Nigerian forward after his debut for Arsenal
Published: February 02, 2025
League One side Rotherham United are considering a late approach to sign Arsenal youngster Nathan Butler-Oyedeji as discussions over a contract extension with the Gunners stall, according to Football Insider.
Butler-Oyedeji has been in impressive form for Arsenal's U21 side in the Premier League 2, recording seven goals and six assists in 10 matches.
However, despite Arsenal's injury concerns at the senior level, the 22-year-old has struggled for first-team opportunities under Mikel Arteta, making his senior debut in a 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League in January.
With uncertainty surrounding his future, Butler-Oyedeji has been linked with a move away from the Emirates.
He was previously linked with a transfer to Swiss side FC Zurich, but the deal fell through.
Now, Rotherham United are exploring a loan move before the winter transfer window closes, as they seek to strengthen their attacking options.
The London-born Nigerian forward has prior experience in the lower division, having spent time on loan at Accrington Stanley and Cheltenham Town, where he made a combined 25 appearances.
Rotherham, currently 15th in League One and seven points off the play-off spots after 28 games, see Butler-Oyedeji as a key addition for the remainder of the season.
Despite Rotherham's interest, Arsenal remain keen on extending Butler-Oyedeji's contract, but negotiations have recently stalled.
With a day left before the transfer window shuts, the academy graduate—who has been with Arsenal since the age of eight—will be eager to resolve his future and secure regular playing time.
