'I have played in the Championship' - Iheanacho eager to make a quick impact at Middlesbrough
Published: February 04, 2025
Kelechi Iheanacho has emphasized that he is ready to make an immediate impact at Middlesbrough following his deadline day loan move from Spanish outfit Sevilla.
The Nigeria international is a household name in English football, thanks to his exploits at Manchester City and Leicester game, and is just four games shy of reaching the milestone of 300 games for teams in England.
Iheanacho has a bit of Championship experience as he was part of the Leicester City side that won the Championship in the 2023-2024 season.
Last season, he scored five goals in 23 appearances in the second tier of English football.
Despite a rocky start at parent club Sevilla, Iheanacho believes he is in the right frame of mind to make his debut for Middlesbrough.
The Taye Academy product has been brought in as a replacement for Emmanuel Latte Lath who has joined MLS club Atlanta United in a record breaking deal.
Speaking to Middlesbrough media, Iheanacho stated: "It was a good experience playing in the Championship with Leicester City and winning. So it's a great experience obviously. I played against Middlesbrough as well, I didn't score against them.
"I have played in the Championship, I know how it is, so I think it's really good to get started.
"I'm feeling ready, I'm ready to go so I can't wait to get started. It's a good club here and the Championship is great, let's see how it goes."
On his big target for the remainder of the season, he said: "To be fair, I'm not a good fan of setting targets but it will be collectively as a team, as a squad to get to the Premier League.
"It's one step at a time, we have got a good team and hopefully work together to achieve that goal."
Iheanacho scored three goals in 11 appearances in all competitions for Sevilla before his move to the Riverside Stadium outfit.
