What Man Utd coach Amorim said about Obi-Martin ahead of FA Cup clash against Leicester
Published: February 07, 2025
Speaking at the pre-match press conference before his side's FA Cup fourth round tie against Leicester City, Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim praised Denmark youth international of Nigerian descent, Chido Obi-Martin.
However, the Portuguese football tactician made it clear that Obi-Martin will not be rushed into the first-team squad.
At just 18, academy product Marcus Rashford made his Manchester United debut under Louis van Gaal, who fast-tracked him into the first team following injuries and loan moves of senior forwards.
Manchester United have a goalscoring problem, netting just 28 times in 24 Premier League matches this season, with only Everton, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton scoring fewer.
Obi-Martin has been prolific for United's youth teams since joining from Arsenal, scoring twelve goals in all competitions this season.
However, Amorim has indicated that the talented teenager is not the solution to the goalscoring problems, and he's not considering bringing the Danish-Nigerian wonderkid into the first team squad, as things stand.
Instead, his priority is to focus on first team strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Josh Zirkzee while boosting their confidence.
In quotes relayed by the official webpage of Manchester United, Amorim said: "He's doing his job, he's improving, he's playing in the youth teams, and we have also other players that can play in that position.
"Rasmus [Hojlund] and Josh [Zirkzee] are there, we bought these two players, so we need to improve them and then sometimes the confidence can change a player.
"We will see in the end of the season, but, until then, we have two strikers that can score goals.
"They proved it in the past. Let's see if we can improve as a team, to help them to score goals.”
Obi-Martin has trained with United's first team this season but has not received a call-up for an official match.
