'Difficult game to come in' - Ex-Chelsea defender lauds George for impressive cameo v Brighton
Published: February 15, 2025
Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has singled out young winger Tyrique George for praise despite the Blues’ disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brighton at the American Express Stadium.
George made his second Premier League appearance in the match, coming on for the ineffective Pedro Neto in the final 25 minutes.
By then, Chelsea were already trailing, with Kaoru Mitoma opening the scoring before Yankuba Minteh sealed the win with a brace by the 63rd minute.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the 19-year-old showed promise, completing 91% of his passes and successfully executing two dribbles.
Speaking on Chelsea’s official app, Cundy acknowledged George’s efforts in a tough situation.
"Fair play to the boy. It’s a difficult game to come in to off the bench. You’re 3-0 down, go on then try and make a difference. Even though the scoreline isn’t going to change, he has.”
George has been a revelation for Chelsea this season, scoring six goals for the youth teams and providing two assists for the first team.
His performances have caught the attention of manager Enzo Maresca, who has promoted him to the first team amid injuries and suspensions to key players.
With Chelsea unable to sign a winger in the winter transfer window due to Mykhailo Mudryk’s suspension, George will be hoping to continue impressing and stake his claim for more first-team opportunities.
