Future of Arsenal's Hale End product with eyes on Nigeria addressed by Doncaster Rovers coach
Published: April 29, 2025
Doncaster Rovers coach Grant McCann has provided an update on the future of Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Joseph Olowu.
The Ibadan-born central defender has been playing for Doncaster Rovers since 2021 after he was let go by Arsenal, where he spent thirteen years.
Olowu is also eligible for England but has committed his international future to the Super Eagles and held talks with officials of the Nigeria Football Federation during the 2019 Fifa U20 World Cup in Poland.
After a breakthrough season at Doncaster Rovers, the 25-year-old was named Player of the Year at Monday's Star Football Awards.
He played a key role in Rovers' promotion to League One, registering three goals and two assists before a season-ending injury sidelined him for the last ten league games.
Olowu's contract with Doncaster Rovers is set to expire in the coming weeks, fueling speculation about his future.
Speaking to Doncaster Free Press, Grant McCann has reaffirmed the club's desire to retain Joseph Olowu.
"He's had a tremendous season and we've missed him the last four or five weeks. His attitude, how he works, trains and goes about his business every day is a testament to him," McCann said.
"He deserves this award. We'd love him to sign a new contract! These things happen in football but we'll do our best to try and do it. Let's see."
Olowu spent time on loan at Irish club Cork City and National League outfit Wealdstone during his time at Arsenal.
He has eight goals and five assists in 144 matches across all competitions for Doncaster Rovers.
