Porto purchase additional 15% stake in Samu Aghehowa amid Aston Villa links
Published: May 05, 2025
With a statement on the club's official website, Porto has confirmed that it exercised the purchase option provided for in the transfer agreement with Atlético Madrid to acquire, definitively and with effect from 30 June 2025, 15% of the economic rights of Samu Aghehowa for a total amount of 5 million euros.
After a failed transfer to Chelsea last summer, the one-cap Spain international, who remains eligible to play for the Super Eagles, transferred to the Portuguese giants in exchange for fifteen million euros for fifty percent of his rights.
Porto now own 65 percent of Aghehowa's contract rights and will also hold an option to purchase an additional 15% of the economic rights - for a sum of 5 million euros to be exercised by July 2026.
Aghehowa has been impressive since joining Porto last summer, scoring 24 goals in 40 all-competition appearances.
Before even making an appearance for Atletico Madrid, the Spain international departed La Liga following a season-long loan at Alavés, where he netted eight goals.
Despite boosting his market value with impressive performances, Atlético chose to sell him permanently to Porto in August 2024.
In recent days, the Spanish-Nigerian forward has been linked with a summer move to Aston Villa, who see him as a possible replacement for Marcus Rashford, with the Manchester United-owned forward unlikely to stay permanently.
Aston Villa scouts were reportedly in Portugal last week to monitor Aghehowa, and they likely left impressed after his brace in a 3-1 victory over Moreirense.
Under contract with Porto until June 30, 2029, Aghehowa has a release clause of 100 million euros in his contract.
