After scoring first Malmo goal, Ekong wants more support from dad who played for Super Eagles
Published: May 15, 2025
Emmanuel Ekong, son of former Super Eagles midfielder Prince Ikpe Ekong, has expressed his desire for his father to attend more of his games following his recent progress with Swedish giants Malmö FF.
The 22-year-old forward, who joined Malmö from Italian side Empoli in January, is steadily making his mark in the Swedish Allsvenskan.
He has featured in four league matches so far—starting three, including Sunday’s commanding 4-1 win over Degerfors at the Stora Valla, where he scored his first goal for the club.
Speaking in an interview with Aftonbladet, Emmanuel revealed how important his father’s presence is to him on matchdays.
"I've told dad to come to the games when I get to play a little more. Maybe it's time now," Emmanuel stated.
The young striker praised his father's support and experience, acknowledging the guidance he receives from the former Nigeria international.
"Absolutely. He has played at this level so he usually says what I can do better. He is kind in his assessments.
"He is very proud of how far I have come. He knows that this is a good level."
Born in Italy and raised in Sweden, Emmanuel Ekong is eligible to represent Italy, Sweden, or Nigeria at international level.
Although he has played for Sweden at the U19 and U21 levels, he remains eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria, having not yet featured for any senior national team.
