Will Awoniyi be at the City Ground on Sunday? Forest boss responds ahead of Chelsea clash
Published: May 23, 2025
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has delivered a heartening update on striker Taiwo Awoniyi ahead of their high-stakes clash against Chelsea at the City Ground on Sunday evening.
Awoniyi suffered a terrifying injury during Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City, crashing into a goalpost and requiring immediate surgery.
The incident left the Nigerian international in an induced coma and ruled him out for the rest of the season, sparking an outpouring of support from fans and football stakeholders around the globe.
In his pre-match press conference, Nuno confirmed that Awoniyi’s condition has significantly improved.
"He is much better. He is already able to walk. The doctors informed us that he had already started his normal life with his foot. So he is much better," said the Portuguese manager.
When pressed on whether Awoniyi would be present at the stadium to cheer on his teammates, Nuno said, "I cannot answer that, it is about the medical. But, he's okay."
The 27-year-old forward has endured a frustrating season marked by injuries and inconsistency, falling behind Chris Wood in the pecking order for the number nine role.
Despite Awoniyi’s absence, Forest will be looking to secure all three points against Chelsea as they chase a dream qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
