Unity Cup: Former Super Eagles defender names two players who can step in for Osimhen, Lookman
Published: May 27, 2025
Super Eagles defender Sam Elijah has tipped Samuel Chukwueze and Sadiq Umar to step up in the absence of key attackers Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
Osimhen and Lookman were among several notable omissions as Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle unveiled a 26-man squad for the Unity Cup.
Their absence has raised concerns among fans ahead of the crucial encounter, but Elijah remains optimistic.
Speaking on the team's prospects, Elijah told allnigeriasoccer.com, "Chukwueze is a somebody who when you think he's down, that is when you get the best of him."
He also praised Umar's resilience, adding, "Umar too is one of our experienced player though he was not available for sometime maybe because of injury and fitness. But I think he's back."
The former Flying Eagles star expressed confidence in the duo's ability to deliver, saying, "I think we will see a very good game from them and think there experience will also count for tomorrow's match."
When asked about Nigeria's chances, Elijah acknowledged the intense nature of the West African derby but backed the Super Eagles to edge it.
"Honestly speaking, it is going to be 50-50 but yet, I give it to the Super Eagles because if you look at it, it is a derby match.
"You know anytime Ghana and Nigeria are playing at any level, it is always a tense match. And now we're playing without our key players like Lookman, Osimhen, and the rest. So, I think it's 50-50 but I will give it to Nigeria."
Nigeria will face Ghana on Wednesday, May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
