Nigeria 1-0 Rwanda: Super Eagles secure three points thanks to Wolves new boy Arokodare

Nigeria's Super Eagles revived their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda on Saturday evening.

The Eric Chelle-led side moved into third place in Group C with 10 points, keeping pressure on leaders South Africa, who they are set to face in a highly anticipated clash on Tuesday.

The match began cautiously, with both teams creating limited clear-cut chances in the first half.

Nigeria suffered an early setback as Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen was forced off due to injury, leaving the Super Eagles without one of their key attacking threats ahead of the crucial encounter against South Africa.

Despite this challenge, Nigeria remained composed and continued to press for the decisive goal.

The breakthrough finally came in the 51st minute when new Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare found the net, converting a well-placed pass to score his second international goal after netting against Russia in June.

Following the goal, Nigeria controlled the tempo, with midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka ensuring defensive stability while Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon tested the Rwandan defense with probing attacks.

Rwanda threatened at times but were unable to breach Nigeria’s disciplined defense, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali making important saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The victory keeps Nigeria in contention for a World Cup spot and sets up an eagerly anticipated showdown with South Africa on Tuesday.
