Christantus Uche won't make Super Eagles debut against Ghana, Maduka Okoye available for selection
Published: May 28, 2025
Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche will not make his international debut on Wednesday evening when Nigeria face long-time rivals Ghana in their opening match of the 2025 Unity Cup, allnigeriasoccer.com has been told.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has omitted the La Liga star from the squad for the clash at the Gtech Community Stadium in London after the player failed to report to camp.
Uche earned his first senior call-up following an impressive breakout season with Getafe, where he recorded ten goal contributions in La Liga and was included in multiple Team of the Week selections.
The talented midfielder was expected to make his Nigeria debut—had he been available.
In more positive news for the Super Eagles, Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has arrived in London and is available for selection.
However, it remains to be seen whether Chelle will hand him a start or stick with Chippa United's Stanley Nwabali, who featured prominently during the World Cup qualifiers earlier this year.
The 2025 Unity Cup marks the return of the Afro-Caribbean football tournament after a 21-year hiatus, featuring Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Should Nigeria defeat Ghana on Wednesday, they will advance to face Jamaica in Saturday's final.
Both Okoye and Uche have also been named in Nigeria's squad for next week's international friendly against Russia in Moscow.
