'I didn't have to think about it' - Dessers on his return to Super Eagles and Unity Cup clash v Ghana
Published: May 28, 2025
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has expressed delight at his return to the Nigerian national team and is looking forward to helping the side secure a win in today's Unity Cup clash against Ghana at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
“I’m very happy to be back. It’s always an honour to be called up and to be here with the boys and the staff,” said Dessers to the Super Eagles media team.
“When you look in the mirror, you see Nigeria. At the moment I got the call, I didn’t have to think about it for a long time. When you get the call you want to go, I went."
The Rangers forward, who has featured for Nigeria in the past, is hoping to build on his previous international experiences and is eyeing a place in major tournaments with the Super Eagles.
“I’ve had a few beautiful moments with the national team already, but I hope to add big tournaments,” he said.
“It would be a dream—almost like the completion of my career—if I could go to a big tournament with Nigeria and hopefully win something.”
Dessers also spoke about the significance of the Unity Cup and the special nature of facing long-time rivals Ghana, particularly in front of a large Nigerian diaspora in London.
“It’s an exciting tournament to play in, especially here in London where we have a lot of Nigerians,” he said. “The first game is against one of our biggest rivals, and that’s always a special match.”
Although the Unity Cup is a friendly competition, Dessers insists the team is approaching the game with full commitment.
“You can call it a friendly, but I don’t think we’ll treat it like that,” he said. “Obviously We want to win and make our people proud.”
