'Looking forward to more chances' - Germany-eligible fullback Felix Agu reflects on Nigeria debut

Werder Bremen's dual-national fullback Felix Agu has shared his excitement and pride after making his senior debut for three-time African champions Nigeria.

After receiving the green light from the German Football Association, the Nigerian Federation added Agu to the Super Eagles roster for the Unity Cup, having initially invited him only to train with the team in London.

Since the Unity Cup is not recognized as an official Fifa-sanctioned competition, the Osnabruck-born defender remains eligible to represent Germany at senior level.

The 25-year-old has not filed a formal request for a change of association, meaning his appearance for Nigeria does not cap-tie him under current regulations.

Agu started and was in action for 83 minutes in the Unity Cup showpiece against Jamaica, before making way for Bruno Onyemaechi.

Speaking to Werder Bremen's official website, Agu highlighted the intensity of the Unity Cup matches, even though they were classified as friendlies, and added that stepping onto the pitch in Nigeria's colours felt very different from his usual club duties in the Bundesliga.

"It was a good week overall. I was given a warm welcome by the team and I’m looking forward to more chances in the future," Felix Agu said.

"It was fantastic. Even though the tournament only consists of friendlies, you could still sense the rivalry.

"Playing for your national team is a different feeling than club football, so I’m pleased to have made my debut and that we won in the end."

Agu would become cap-tied to the Super Eagles should he feature in their competitive fixtures during the September international window.
