'Russia showed a very high level' - Maduka Okoye admits Super Eagles were pushed to the limit
Published: June 07, 2025
Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has admitted that the Super Eagles were tested to their limits by Russia during Friday’s 1–1 international friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
The 24-year-old, who played the full match for Nigeria, praised the quality of the Russian side and the intensity of the contest.
Speaking on Russian broadcaster Match TV, Okoye said: "The Russian team showed a very high level. We had to give it our all to play on equal terms with your team. I think it was a great match for the fans."
The Super Eagles, who are preparing for upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, fell behind in the first half but managed to equalise after the break.
Despite the result, Okoye believes the match provided valuable lessons for Nigeria.
"The balls were a little easier than usual," he added. “But overall, everything was fine. I really liked the atmosphere at the stadium.”
The game marked a rare meeting between the two nations and was played in front of a lively crowd at the Luzhniki Stadium.
The friendly was part of Russia’s ongoing international schedule amid its continued suspension from UEFA and FIFA competitions.
For Nigeria, the focus now shifts to fine-tuning tactics ahead of their next World Cup qualifying matches, with Friday’s performance offering both positives and areas to improve.
