Official: Nephew of two former Super Eagles defenders leaves Man City on a free transfer
Published: June 09, 2025
Manchester City have submitted their retained and released list to the Premier League following the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season.
Tai Sodje is set to depart the Citizens on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, 2025.
An attacker by trade, Tai has football in his blood as his uncles played for English clubs before calling time on their careers.
He is the nephew of former Super Eagles defenders Efe and Sam Sodje, as well as ex-striker Akpo Sodje.
Sodje was Manchester City's top scorer in the U18 Premier League during the 2020-2021 season with 19 goals from 22 appearances.
His goals helped Manchester City become the first club to claim a clean sweep of Premier League titles in the same season.
He joined Manchester City at U12 level, rising through the ranks to make his competitive debut for the U18s in a Premier League Cup win against Reading in February 2020.
Tai's progress was hampered by injuries across the last four seasons, with the forward managing just 19 Premier League 2 outings.
He also represented Manchester City in the EFL Trophy, UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup.
Femi Fapetu, Justin Oboavwoduo and Michael Okeke are under contract with Manchester City and have been retained for next season.
