'Looking forward' - Rangers coach expects Dessers back on Monday amid AEK Athens interest

Rangers manager Russell Martin has confirmed he expects Cyriel Dessers to return to the club on Monday, despite ongoing transfer speculation linking the Nigerian striker with a move to AEK Athens.

Dessers recently tied the knot with his partner during the off-season break and is due to rejoin pre-season training next week.

His return comes as Rangers gear up for a crucial UEFA Champions League playoff clash against Panathinaikos.

The forward enjoyed a productive 2024/25 campaign, netting 18 goals and providing two assists in 35 Scottish Premiership appearances, finishing as the league's top scorer.

However, despite his numbers, Dessers faced criticism from sections of the fanbase over the course of the season.

His strong goal-scoring record has reportedly attracted interest from Greek giants AEK Athens, sparking questions over his future at Ibrox. But speaking to Sky Sports, Martin appeared calm about the situation.

"The updates will come as and when they are actually real,” Martin told Sky Sports Scotland

"At the minute, I'm expecting him to return on Monday and I'm looking forward to working with him.”

With the new season fast approaching, Rangers are hoping to retain their key assets as they aim to win the Premiership title and secure a spot in the Champions League group stage.

Whether Dessers will be part of that journey remains to be seen, but for now, Martin is counting on his striker’s return.
