No mercy: Tosin and George strike against the motherland as Chelsea crush 4-time African champions
Published: June 25, 2025
Tosin Adarabioyo and Tyrique George were impressive as Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win over four-time African champions Espérance Sportive de Tunis to secure a place in the Club World Cup last-16.
Despite their African roots — with Tosin eligible to represent Nigeria and George qualifying for both the Super Eagles and the Black Stars — the duo showed no mercy against the motherland, each finding the back of the net in Chelsea's commanding 3-0 victory.
In front of a lively crowd at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Chelsea wrapped up their Group D campaign with a professional performance.
Tosin opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, glancing home a pinpoint free-kick from Enzo Fernandez for his fifth Chelsea goal since joining on a free transfer from Fulham.
It was a commanding display from the 27-year-old centre-back, who also helped marshal a backline that earned a clean sheet.
Just moments after Tosin’s opener, Liam Delap made it two, showcasing his composure in the box to slot past goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said.
With the two-goal cushion, Chelsea looked in control heading into the second half.
It was 19-year-old Tyrique George, who rounded off the night in style. The highly-rated academy product came off the bench and struck a stunning long-range effort in stoppage time to seal the result.
It marked his third senior goal for the Blues and further solidified his growing reputation as one of Chelsea’s most promising youngsters.
With Chelsea now through to the knockout stage and looking to go deep into the competition, the performances of Tosin and George will give Maresca confidence in his squad depth as the Club World Cup heats up.
Their next challenge comes on Saturday, when they take on Portuguese giants Benfica in the Club World Cup last-16.
