Confirmed: Super Eagles-eligible defender departs Ajax Amsterdam after 11 years of service
Published: June 29, 2025
With a statement on the official website, Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam have announced the departure of quad-national central defender Precious Ugwu.
Eligible to play for four nations, Ugwu was born in Germany, qualifies for Nigeria through his father and is also eligible to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina via his mother.
He played a pivotal role in the Netherlands' triumph at the 2025 European U19 Championship, starting all five matches and contributing to three clean sheets en route to the title.
Ugwu has left Ajax Amsterdam after eleven years of service, having joined the club's academy in 2014.
The 19-year-old has opted for a fresh start after struggling to break into the first team at the Amsterdam club.
Ugwu has joined FC Volendam, signing a three-year contract with the Eredivisie new boys until June 30, 2028.
The defender made his Keuken Kampioen Divisie debut for Jong Ajax on February 26, 2024 and went on to make 31 appearances in the second tier of Dutch football, registering one goal and two assists.
In his final season at Ajax, he was called up for three games in the Eredivisie but never made it onto the pitch, missing the chance to make his senior debut.
Ugwu has been praised for his physical strength, speed and shooting ability, making him a formidable presence at the back.
