Nwaneri stays: Arsenal on the verge of tying down Chelsea-linked attacker after weekend talks

Arsenal are close to reaching an agreement with highly-rated teenager of Nigerian descent Ethan Nwaneri over a new deal, following a significant breakthrough in negotiations over the weekend.
Transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday morning that a deal could be 'sealed in principle this week,' with the Gunners confident of securing the 18-year-old's long-term future amid interest from Chelsea.
Romano added: "Arsenal believe progress made over weekend was significant with all indications positive at this stage."
Premier League rivals Chelsea have been monitoring the situation of Nwaneri in recent weeks, but Arsenal have remained determined to keep hold of the attacking midfielder, who made history in 2022 by becoming the youngest-ever Premier League player at just 15 years and 181 days old.
Despite links to a move across London, the Gunners are now optimistic that they will see off competition and retain one of their most prized academy products.
Nwaneri enjoyed a breakout campaign in his first full season with the first team, having scored nine goals and provided two assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
The attacker has not yet reported for pre-season training in La Manga, Spain because he was on international duty with the Young Lions at the 2025 European U21 Championship last month.
He has entered the final year of his contract with Arsenal, whom he officially joined at the age of eight.
