Competition for Felix Agu: Leeds United loan out versatile Nigeria-eligible fullback
Published: August 28, 2025
German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen have confirmed the signing of Nigeria-eligible fullback Isaac Schmidt on a season-long loan from Leeds United, with an option to make the move permanent.
Schmidt arrives in Bremen to strengthen the defensive ranks following the serious injury suffered by Mitchell Weiser.
A versatile defender, he is capable of operating on either flank and is expected to provide competition for Nigeria international Felix Agu, who shares similar attributes.
Born in Lausanne to a Nigerian mother and a German-Swiss father, Schmidt is eligible to represent three national teams.
The 25-year-old has already earned three senior caps for Switzerland, though all came in friendly matches, leaving his international future still open.
The defender joined Leeds United in the summer of 2024 but struggled for minutes, making just 14 appearances and playing a total of 251 minutes in all competitions.
In search of regular football, the FC Lausanne academy product now looks to reboot his career in the Bundesliga.
Before moving to England, Schmidt enjoyed a productive spell at FC St. Gallen between 2021 and 2024, registering seven goals and ten assists across 108 competitive games.
