Allegations of bias: Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle defends his controversial CHAN picks

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has strongly defended his player selections for the 2024 African Nations Championship, stating that his choices are guided by tactical philosophy rather than club reputation or personal bias.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, which kicks off this weekend across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Chelle responded to mounting criticism over his 23-man squad , composed entirely of players from the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The Malian-born coach emphasized his commitment to a style of play built on ball possession and high pressing, noting that only players who fit this approach were considered.

"My only thinking is I have a philosophy. I want to keep the ball, and when we don’t have the ball, I want us to press high. So I need to bring some players who can play in my philosophy," Chelle explained.

Chelle cited examples from other African nations to defend his strategy, pointing out that top teams often draw heavily from dominant domestic clubs.

“If you see Morocco, a lot of players are from Raja or Wydad. In South Africa, this team has eight players from one club. Remo Stars won the league, but for me, it's about who fits the game plan.”

Responding to accusations of favouritism towards Remo Stars, whose coach also serves as his assistant, Chelle dismissed the notion, saying selection was solely based on merit and tactical suitability.

"This is not a question about my assistant being the coach of Remo. No, no, no. I need players who deserve to be here through their game and who fit my philosophy,” he insisted.

"Maybe one or two players deserve to be in this team, but this is the reality."

The final squad, led by captain Junior Harrison Nduka and including the likes of Sikiru Alimi and Godwin Obaje, was selected after an intensive camp at the Remo Stars Sports Institute.

Chelle also acknowledged the loss of key players like Papa Daniel Mustapha, who became ineligible after signing with an overseas club.

"We miss Papa Daniel. We miss a lot of players. But this is a new team, and we’ve worked a lot."

Nigeria, drawn in Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Sudan and Congo, face a challenging path in the competition.

Chelle remains focused on implementing his vision and believes his chosen squad reflects that commitment.

"There are many good players in the NPFL, but I must select those who can execute my game plan. That’s the reality."
