'All man for himself' – Tochukwu reflects on Super Eagles call-up, Chelle's influence, CHAN opener

Nigeria midfielder Tochukwu Michael has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles B squad ahead of their crucial Group D opener against Senegal at the 2024 African Nations Championship, emphasizing team unity, determination, and belief.

Speaking ahead of the match, Michael, who plies his trade with Remo Stars in the Nigeria Premier Football League, described his maiden national team call-up as a special moment.

"For being my first time, it has been a great experience from my coaches down to my teammates,” the midfielder said.

"It has been a great feeling for me. We have a couple of players good as well. So, it's a competition— all man for himself.

"But I have a great feeling that I have so much to offer. I'm looking forward to a lot. But first, I'm looking forward to the team.”

Michael, one of nine Remo Stars players selected by head coach Eric Chelle, emphasized the importance of collective focus and team bonding.

"I really want us to have one mind, one spirit, which is the goal of winning the championship, and we are focused,” he stated.

"I'm more focused on the team bond. So I can't play alone. It's an 11-man's game. So I believe in everybody, and there's a positive spirit that will go far.”

He also praised Chelle’s leadership and tactical approach, calling the coach a key factor in the team’s growing confidence.

"To whom much is given, much is expected. So he's not a difficult person. He's a very good coach from my own view because he understands and speaks football,” Michael explained.

"If you have good understanding, you understand that he's a quality coach."

Looking ahead to Tuesday's game against reigning champions Senegal, Michael acknowledged the challenge while maintaining belief in Nigeria’s chances.

"In as much as we want it, our opponent also wants it. But it's about who wants it more,” he said.

"So I feel, and I'm positive, that we will not fail the country because it's a privilege. Amongst many, few were chosen. So we are ready to give our all to have the gold medal at the end.”

Nigeria will square off against defending champions Senegal on Tuesday, August 5, in their opening game of the 2024 CHAN.
