An evening to forget for Leonard Ngenge and 4 other observations from Nigeria's loss to Sudan

Nigeria’s Super Eagles saw their 2024 CHAN campaign come to a bitter end on Tuesday night, suffering a crushing 4-0 loss to Sudan.

The defeat matched the Super Eagles heaviest loss in African Nations Championship history, equalling the 4-0 thrashing they suffered against Morocco in the 2018 final.

An early own goal from Leonard Ngenge handed the Sudanese the lead and Walieldin Khidir made it 2-0 before the break.

In the second half, AbdelRaziq struck twice to seal a dominant victory for Sudan and send Nigeria out of the tournament.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the match.

Sikiru Alimi flops as Chelle benches Anas Yusuf

Remo Stars striker Sikiru Alimi delivered a disappointing performance in Nigeria’s defeat to Sudan, despite being handed a starting spot by coach Eric Chelle ahead of NPFL top scorer Anas Yusuf.

Yusuf, who was also left on the bench in the first game, netted 18 goals during the 2024/2025 NPFL season.

In contrast, Alimi scored just five goals but played a key role in helping Remo Stars clinch the league title.

Chelle’s selection is expected to spark debate among Nigerian football fans, with many questioning the decision to sideline Yusuf in such a crucial match.

Abdelraziq shines for Sudan

Sudan’s midfield dynamo AbdelRaziq produced a standout display, particularly in the second half.

Wearing the number 8 jersey, he struck twice after the break to seal victory for his side.

His commanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award at full-time.

Super Eagles struggle with aerial balls

Nigeria found it difficult to cope with crosses and set pieces against Sudan, particularly in the first half.

The opening goal came via an own goal following a precise delivery into the box. Sudan’s second came after an aerial duel in which Ngengen Leonard handled the ball, conceding a penalty.

Throughout the game, the Super Eagles’ vulnerability in the air was evident.

Sudan clinical with opportunities

The Sudanese put on an impressive display and made the most of their limited chances.

Despite creating few chances, the team made the most of them, converting nearly every opportunity.

They struck twice in the first half and added another two goals after the break, leaving Nigerian fans stunned.

Leonard Ngenge’s defensive struggles

It was an evening to forget for Leonard Ngenge.

The Ikorodu City defender was directly involved in both of Sudan’s goals in the first half, scoring the own goal for the opener and conceding the penalty for the second.

His struggles at the back prompted his substitution at the start of the second half, further underlining his difficult outing.
