NFF pull off another coup: West Brom youth product chooses Nigeria over England and The Gambia
Published: August 17, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that the Nigeria Football Federation have pulled off another recruitment coup, with West Brom youth product Divine Onyemachi opting to represent Nigeria over England and The Gambia.
Born in The Gambia, Onyemachi qualifies to represent the Young Scorpions as well as Nigeria through his parents and England where he has lived for several years.
Having committed his international future to Nigeria, the exciting winger has been handed a maiden call-up to the Flying Eagles ahead of the 2025 Fifa U20 World Cup.
Onyemachi has assured that he will attend the training camp in Abuja but his arrival date is not yet confirmed due to his commitments at new club Lecce.
The talented forward joined the Italian club earlier this month after leaving West Brom, where he spent two years.
Despite being offered fresh terms by the Baggies and attracting interest from other English teams, Onyemachi signed his first professional contract with Lecce and will begin his career with the club's Primavera 1 team.
The 18-year-old made his competitive debut for Lecce youth team against AC Milan on the opening day of the new Primavera 1 season on Sunday morning.
Known for his pace, versatility and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, Onyemachi has already drawn comparisons with reigning African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman.
His record at West Brom speaks volumes, with 20 goals in 43 appearances in the U18 Premier League, alongside two goals in five matches in the FA Youth Cup.
