Super Eagles out, Red Devils still dreaming: Three Congo players Nigeria must stop in CHAN finale

Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles B, already eliminated from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a 1-0 loss to Senegal and a crushing 4-0 defeat to Sudan, will face Congo in their final Group D match today at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

Despite their exit, coach Eric Chelle has emphasized playing for pride, with the team aiming to end their campaign on a winning note.

Congo, still in contention for a quarter-final spot with two points from draws against Sudan and Senegal, presents a formidable challenge.

Here are three key Congo players the Super Eagles B must watch out for in this crucial encounter.

1. Dechan Moussavou (Forward)

Dechan Moussavou has been Congo’s standout attacking threat, scoring the opening goal in their 1-1 draw against Senegal.

His clinical finishing and ability to exploit defensive gaps make him a significant danger. Moussavou’s movement off the ball and knack for positioning in the box could punish Nigeria’s shaky backline, which has conceded five goals in two matches.

The Super Eagles’ defenders, including Junior Nduka and Leonard Ngenge, must maintain tight marking to neutralize his impact in this must-win game for Congo.

2. Carly Ekongo (Midfielder)

Carly Ekongo proved his worth by scoring a stoppage-time equalizer against Sudan, showcasing his composure under pressure.

His ability to dictate play from midfield and deliver precise passes could exploit Nigeria’s midfield lapses, evident in their loss to Sudan.

Ekongo’s late runs into the box add another dimension to Congo’s attack.

Nigeria’s midfielders, such as Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo, will need to disrupt his rhythm to limit Congo’s creativity.

3. Simon Ulrich Samba (Goalkeeper)

Congo’s shot-stopper, Samba, has been pivotal in their resilient defensive displays, conceding only two goals in two games.

His command of the penalty area and sharp reflexes frustrated Senegal and Sudan.

With Nigeria struggling to score—failing to find the net in the 2024 CHAN action—Samba’s performance could be decisive.

Forwards Sikiru Alimi and Anthony Ijoma must test him early to shake his confidence.

As Nigeria battles for honor and Congo fights for progression, this clash promises intensity. Kick-off is at 6:00 Nigerian Time.
