Nigeria 2-0 Congo: Yusuf, Alimi on target as Super Eagles end CHAN campaign with a win

Nigeria closed their African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) campaign with a 2-0 win over Congo on Tuesday evening.

Having already been eliminated after losses to Senegal and Sudan, the Super Eagles delivered a strong performance in their final group-stage game.

The opening goal came in the 55th minute when Anas Yusuf finished from close range following a precise header from Sikiru Alimi, giving Nigeria the lead.

The goal sparked energy in a previously quiet match, with both teams struggling to create clear chances during the first half.

Nigeria’s defense, which had been vulnerable in previous games, showed improved organization, while their midfield gradually took control of possession.

In stoppage time, Nigeria doubled their advantage. Alimi scored a stooping header in the third minute of stoppage time, cementing the victory before being substituted for Godwin Obaje.

The late goal allowed the Super Eagles to end the match confidently.

The game saw several disciplinary actions, including a red card for Congo’s Charles Atipo following a VAR review of a foul on Alimi.

Multiple yellow cards were issued to both sides, reflecting a physical style of play throughout.

Nigeria also made several substitutions, giving opportunities to fringe players and maintaining energy on the pitch until the final whistle.

Congo were unable to respond effectively and finished their CHAN 2024 campaign with two points from three group games.

Nigeria, meanwhile, secured their first win of the tournament, providing a measure of redemption after two difficult results and concluding their group stage on a more positive note.
