'No better feeling' – Nathan Tella aiming to prove to Eric Chelle he deserves Afcon call-up
Published: August 21, 2025
Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella is eager to demonstrate to Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle that he merits a spot in Nigeria's squad for the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Tella, who enjoyed a standout season with the German club last campaign, missed out on the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast, where Nigeria reached the final but were defeated by the host nation.
Speaking to Olympics, the 26-year-old winger admitted the disappointment of not being part of last year's AFCON but said watching his teammates' strong run to the final only fueled his motivation.
"Because I missed out on the AFCON last year, my first aim is to be in the squad for that because I saw how well the boys did, and obviously the final was unfortunate," Tella explained.
He added, "Seeing the boys representing my country, and our country doing really well, made me proud and that's what motivated me even more.."
Tella emphasized that representing Nigeria is a privilege that must be earned through hard work and consistent performances at club level.
"To even be selected, I need to show what I can do at club level. I need to take myself to the next step because to play for Nigeria, you're not just handed the shirt.
"You have to earn it. You have work hard for it and then once you get in, it's to stay in.
"There's no better feeling, no bigger achievement than being able to represent your country."
Beaten finalists in 2023, motivation is at an all-time high for Tella to prove to Nigeria head coach Éric Chelle that he must be on the plane to Morocco at the end of the year.
To further prove himself, Tella will be determined to maintain his excellent form from last season at Leverkusen under new manager Erik ten Hag when the Bundesliga season kicks off.
