Former Flying Eagles striker likely to depart Sunderland before transfer window shuts
Published: August 22, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com can confirm that former Flying Eagles striker Ahmed Abdullahi is likely to be moved on by Premier League newcomers Sunderland before the close of the summer transfer window.
Transfer Feed earlier reported that Abdullahi could be on his way out of the Stadium of Light, with interest said to be coming from clubs in League One.
However, ANS understands that nothing concrete has been agreed at this stage, whether on a temporary or permanent basis.
Abdullahi joined Sunderland from Belgian side Gent on transfer deadline day last summer but has yet to make a senior appearance for the Black Cats.
The Nigeria youth international underwent groin surgery shortly after his arrival and was eased back to fitness with the U21s, making his debut in a Premier League 2 clash against West Ham United in January 2025.
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris took a closer look at the HB Academy Abuja product during pre-season preparations, handing him minutes in friendlies against South Shields, Sevilla, Heart of Midlothian and Hull City.
Despite training regularly with the first team and allocated a squad number, Abdullahi was not called up for the Premier League clash against West Ham.
That situation has been compounded by Sunderland's recruitment drive in attack, with Simon Adingra, Chemsdine Talbi and Marc Guiu all added to the squad this summer, pushing the Nigerian further down the pecking order.
Abdullahi, who remains under contract until June 30, 2028, is now expected to seek regular first-team football elsewhere.
