'Stupid' – Gary Neville blasts Bassey for giving away a penalty in Fulham's draw v Man Utd
Published: August 24, 2025
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has criticized Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey for conceding a penalty in Fulham's 1-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the 35th minute when Bassey wrestled Mason Mount to the ground while United were preparing to take a corner.
Although the referee initially missed the infringement, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, prompting the official to review the challenge and award a penalty to the visitors.
United captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the spot-kick but failed to convert, sparing Bassey immediate embarrassment.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville was unimpressed with the Nigerian international's decision-making, branding it reckless.
"There is a little throw - it is reckless and stupid from Bassey - It is stupid as we know referees have been told to clamp down on this," Neville said.
Bassey, who joined Fulham from Ajax in the summer of 2023, has been one of the Cottagers' most reliable defenders since his move.
Manchester United took the lead after Rodrigo Muniz inadvertently put the ball into his own net, but Fulham hit back with an equalizer from Emile Smith Rowe following a fine assist by Alex Iwobi.
The draw leaves Fulham and Manchester United still searching for their first win of the new Premier League campaign.
