'I'll get a fine' – Bassey admits after revealing that Man Utd goal should have been disallowed
Published: August 24, 2025
Manchester United left Craven Cottage with a point after being held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham in Sunday’s Premier League clash.
The hosts fought back impressively, with substitute Emile Smith Rowe cancelling out Rodrigo Muniz’s own goal just 93 seconds after coming off the bench to secure a share of the spoils.
Two major refereeing decisions dominated the post-match debate, the first coming in the opening half when Chris Kavanagh, after a lengthy VAR review, awarded Manchester United a penalty for Calvin Bassey's foul on Mason Mount.
However, Bruno Fernandes squandered the chance, firing over the bar.
The more contentious incident came with United's opener when replays showed Bassey being pushed by Leny Yoro in the build-up.
Bassey suggested he was unfairly impeded in the build-up to Manchester United's goal but stopped short of going further, admitting he could face disciplinary action if he spoke too freely.
"It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball and it is an advantage to him. It should have been disallowed,” Bassey told Sky Sports.
"When the referee looks back at I think they will be disappointed. I cannot say too much, otherwise I will get a fine!
"It is a foul. When you go up to a jump, any little touch can put you off. He wasn't trying to speak to me - he was trying to speak to my captain.
"What do you want me to do? Jump on the floor. It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball."
Speaking post-match, Fulham manager Marco Silva backed Bassey, claiming the infringement was obvious and urged referees to apply the rules consistently.
