Why Getafe had no choice but to sell Uche to Wolves as Leeds and Sunderland miss out

Christantus Uche's departure from Getafe is imminent, with Wolverhampton Wanderers winning the race for one of La Liga's versatile midfielders.

The Nigeria international, signed from Ceuta just a year ago for €500,000, will move to Molineux in a deal worth €16 million plus €4 million in variables, and is expected to sign a deal with the Premier League club until 2030, according to Spanish sports daily AS.

Getafe had hoped to hold out for the striker’s €25 million buyout clause, but ongoing financial constraints and the need to register new arrivals left them with little choice but to cash in.

The funds from Uche's sale will allow the club to register Neyou, Sancris, Kiko Femenía, Abqar, Juanmi and Javi Muñoz.

The deal comes as a bitter blow for Premier League new boys Sunderland and Leeds United, both of whom had tracked Uche closely.

Sunderland were preparing an official bid this week, while Leeds had also made enquiries.

However, the Premier League new boys could not match the financial package offered by Wolves, whose decisive move ended the race.

Uche's breakthrough campaign in La Liga ensured he put himself in the shop window.

The midfielder was directly involved in ten goals across 33 appearances last season and has already carried that form into the new campaign, opening with a goal and an assist in the club's first fixture.

Though a transfer to Wolves is on the horizon, Uche has been named in Getafe's starting lineup for Monday night's La Liga clash against Sevilla.
