Ngumoha becomes Liverpool's youngest matchwinner in PL after goal v Newcastle United
Published: August 25, 2025
Super Eagles-eligible forward Rio Ngumoha etched his name into Premier League history on Monday night, scoring a dramatic late winner in Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
The 16-year-old, who joined the reigning champions from Chelsea last summer, struck decisively in the closing stages after Newcastle had battled back to level the game at 2-2.
Ryan Gravenberch had opened the scoring for Liverpool before Hugo Ekitike doubled the lead early in the second half.
But the hosts roared back through Bruno Guimarães and William Osula, sending the home crowd into raptures.
With the game delicately poised, Mohamed Salah whipped in a low cross that Ngumoha expertly guided into the net, sealing all three points for Arne Slot’s side.
The goal marked Ngumoha’s first Premier League contribution on his debut for the Reds and set a new milestone.
With the strike, he became Liverpool's youngest player ever to score a winning goal in the Premier League at 16 years and 361 days.
And the second youngest 16-year-old to score a decisive Premier League strike, following Wayne Rooney’s famous winner for Everton against Arsenal in October 2002.
Overall, Ngumoha now ranks as the fourth youngest goalscorer in league history, behind James Vaughan (16 years, 270 days), James Milner (16 years, 356 days) and Rooney (16 years, 360 days).
Though capped by England at youth level, Ngumoha remains eligible to represent Nigeria.
As the season unfolds, he will be eager to build on this historic start and continue his development under Slot at Anfield.
