Roma open talks to sign youngest Nigerian to score for Chelsea in the Premier League
Published: August 26, 2025
AS Roma and Chelsea are set to hold direct talks on Tuesday regarding the transfer of 19-year-old winger Tyrique George, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
At 19 years and 75 days old, George became the youngest Nigerian–eligible player to score for Chelsea in the Premier League when he netted against Fulham on April 20, 2025, surpassing the previous record held by Carney Chukwuemeka.
Roma are eager to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the closing stages of the summer transfer window.
Chelsea are reportedly open to a permanent deal for George, including a substantial sell-on clause to safeguard the player’s future value.
Roma, meanwhile, are negotiating with both the club and George’s representatives to secure terms quickly.
The Italian side turned to George after their pursuit of Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho stalled, seeing the Chelsea prospect as a more attainable solution to bolster their wide positions.
Competition for George remains intense, with Bundesliga clubs RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach also showing interest.
Leipzig is reportedly preparing a formal offer, further complicating Roma’s efforts.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has emphasized strengthening the left flank while managing squad depth, making George’s departure increasingly likely.
An England U19 international, George is also eligible to represent Nigeria and Ghana.
The Camden-born winger had a breakthrough season with Chelsea, contributing to the club’s FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League victories.
He scored one goal and provided two assists in 12 Conference League appearances, while also becoming Chelsea’s youngest scorer at the Club World Cup.
Despite his progress, George is reportedly seeking regular first-team opportunities, making a move away from Stamford Bridge a viable path for continued development.
