'Good to go' – Martin delivers update on Dessers that will please Rangers and Super Eagles fans
Published: August 26, 2025
Ahead of the UEFA Champions League playoff second leg tie against Club Brugge, manager Russell Martin has confirmed Cyriel Dessers is ready for action, a development set to delight both Rangers and Super Eagles fans.
When asked about Dessers’ condition during the pre-match press conference, Martin stated: "Yes, he is here, and he's good to go."
The Nigeria international has been absent from Rangers’ last three matches, including the 3-1 defeat in Glasgow, which left the Scottish side’s Champions League qualification hopes in the balance.
Dessers’ return comes at a critical time for Rangers, who have struggled to find attacking rhythm in recent weeks.
The 30-year-old forward’s physical presence, ability to hold up play, and knack for performing under pressure have been key components of Martin’s system since his arrival.
His inclusion offers tactical flexibility and a potential morale boost for the squad.
While Martin has not confirmed whether Dessers will start or be eased back from the bench, his availability alone is seen as a positive development.
The striker’s resurgence is equally significant on the international stage.
Dessers, who has made eight appearances for the Super Eagles in friendly matches, remains eligible to represent his country of birth, Belgium.
However, he has been included in Nigeria’s provisional 31-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa.
His return to fitness ensures that Nigeria manager Eric Chelle will have last season's Scottish Premiership top scorer available for these crucial ties.
