'There is still room' – Liverpool boss leaves door open for birthday boy Ngumoha in Arsenal clash
Published: August 29, 2025
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has hinted that teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha could play a part in Sunday’s blockbuster Premier League clash against Arsenal at Anfield, despite the club’s extensive summer recruitment.
Ngumoha, widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in English football, etched his name into Liverpool’s history earlier this week with a dramatic late winner in a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
His 100th-minute strike not only secured all three points but also made him Liverpool’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer and the fourth-youngest in the competition’s history.
When addressing the media in his pre-match press conference, Slot, who has overseen a strong start to Liverpool’s title defence, reserved special praise for Ngumoha, who turns 17 today, August 29.
"It is the beauty of football that although we have spent a lot there is still room for him and he can show his quality,” the Dutchman was quoted as saying by The BBC.
"As things stand there is still room for him to show that in the upcoming game as well. So I think he will be on the bench and has a fair chance of coming in if needed."
Ngumoha’s rapid rise has been fuelled by an impressive pre-season campaign, during which he showcased his flair, pace, and ability to deliver goals and assists against senior opposition.
He also made his senior debut in the FA Cup earlier this year, a milestone that marked the beginning of his breakthrough into Liverpool’s first-team picture.
Slot’s willingness to keep faith with the teenager underlines Liverpool’s commitment to balancing marquee signings with the development of homegrown talent.
Sunday’s clash with Arsenal, one of the early highlights of the Premier League calendar, could provide Ngumoha with another chance to accelerate his meteoric rise.
