Super Eagles striker Sadiq changes shirt number amid uncertainty over Real Sociedad future

Umar Sadiq’s situation at Real Sociedad remains a subject of speculation after the Nigerian forward was handed a new squad number for the 2025/26 season, even as doubts over his long-term future at the club persist, according to a report by SPORT.

On Thursday, the Basque club released its official list of shirt numbers, confirming that Sadiq will wear the number 15 jersey, previously vacated by Urko.

The striker had donned number 19 before his loan move to Valencia last season, where he was a long-time transfer target throughout the summer window.

Despite the symbolic gesture of reinstating him in the squad, Sadiq’s position within manager Sergio Francisco's plans is far from assured.

The 28-year-old is currently working under a personalized fitness program after illness disrupted his preseason preparations.

The setback forced him to miss most of Real Sociedad’s summer build-up, hindering his chances of regaining a regular role.

Reports also suggest lingering tension between Sadiq and club president Jokin Aperribay, adding to uncertainty over his future.

Interest in the forward remains strong, particularly from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, with additional links to Turkey, Russia, Greece, and Mexico.

Valencia, who had tracked Sadiq closely, submitted an offer worth around €4–5 million plus a sell-on clause, but Sociedad turned it down.

Girona’s proposals were understood to be higher, yet no deal materialized before the transfer window closed.

For now, Sadiq faces a crossroads: either accept a move to one of the still-open markets abroad or fight to convince Sergio Francisco he deserves a place in Sociedad’s attack.
