After Lazio's Dele-Bashiru, another Super Eagles midfielder suffers injury before WCQ
Published: September 24, 2025
Nigeria’s midfield options have taken another hit after Raphael Onyedika sustained an injury during Club Brugge’s Belgian Pro League clash against Westerlo on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old midfielder went down in the 15th minute after chasing a long pass, immediately grabbing his hamstring.
He required support from the medical team to leave the pitch, leaving Brugge to continue the match without one of their key players.
Onyedika’s setback follows closely on the heels of Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s injury last weekend.
Dele-Bashiru was forced off early during the Derby della Capitale against Roma, which Lazio lost 1-0.
The 24-year-old has been ruled out for around a month with a muscle injury.
The double blow is a major concern for Nigeria, with both players now doubtful for October’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
Onyedika has been an ever-present figure for Club Brugge this season, offering both defensive steel and composure in midfield.
His absence could affect the Belgian side’s rhythm in domestic competition, while also limiting Nigeria’s depth in a crucial department.
With Dele-Bashiru sidelined and Onyedika awaiting further medical assessment, Chelle may be forced to consider alternative midfield options as Nigeria prepare for two must-win fixtures in October.
