'Goal was outstanding' - Celtic coach Rodgers reveals one of Iheanacho's great strengths
Published: September 25, 2025
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has hailed Kelechi Iheanacho’s match-winning qualities after the Nigerian striker scored in the 1-1 draw against Crvena zvezda in the Europa League.
The 28-year-old latched onto a precise pass from Benjamin Nygren, displayed excellent control near the penalty spot, and calmly guided the ball into the far corner.
"I thought Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal was outstanding,” Rodgers told TNT Sports, via BBC.
"I wanted us to be more proactive in the game, but overall, it was a nice first step for us in the competition.”
Iheanacho, who joined Celtic on a free transfer in the summer, came off the bench at the Rajko Mitic Stadium to give the visitors the lead.
Rodgers highlighted the forward’s impact in improving Celtic’s attacking play in the second half.
"We needed someone centrally to hold the ball up. I felt we arrived in the final third and in the first half were loose. One of Kele’s great strengths is that he can take the ball in and progress us up the pitch, and he gave us a better platform,” the Celtic boss explained.
Iheanacho has made a bright start to life in Scotland, scoring two goals and providing an assist in just three appearances across all competitions.
His early form has lifted optimism among the Celtic support, with many hopeful he can deliver consistently throughout the campaign.
Following difficult spells at Sevilla and Middlesbrough last season, Iheanacho looks rejuvenated under Rodgers’ guidance.
With Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin approaching in October, the former Manchester City striker will be eager to sustain his form and push for a Super Eagles recall.
He was overlooked for the national team’s recent fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa but could now force his way back into contention.
