Brazilian midfielder Oscar tells Mikel why he snubbed Tottenham Hotspur for Chelsea
Published: October 02, 2025
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Brazilian midfielder Oscar reflected on the circumstances of his 2012 move to Chelsea, explaining to former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel how the Blues persuaded him to leave Internacional and reject rival offers.
At the time, the highly rated playmaker was already a full international and attracting interest from across Europe.
Fresh off their UEFA Champions League triumph, Chelsea were undergoing a transition, looking to blend their experienced core with younger talent.
Chelsea presented Oscar with a long-term project that, in his words, was impossible to refuse.
Despite concerns about his physicality and suggestions he would be better suited to Spanish football before moving to England, Oscar was determined to prove himself in the Premier League.
He credited the support of senior teammates and fellow Brazilians at Stamford Bridge for easing his adaptation to English football.
While Chelsea ultimately secured his signature, Oscar revealed that Tottenham Hotspur were also keen on his services.
Then-Spurs manager André Villas-Boas personally reached out to the midfielder in a bid to lure him to North London.
However, Oscar felt Chelsea offered the stronger platform, both in terms of ambition and quality, making his decision straightforward.
The move proved successful as Oscar went on to enjoy a trophy-laden spell at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League, Europa League and League Cup.
