Manchester United's Patrick Dorgu discusses full meaning of his Nigerian name

Manchester United defender Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu has opened up about the meaning of his full name and the central role faith plays in his life and career.

The cap-tied Denamrk international, of Nigerian descent, joined the Red Devils in January 2025 and has embraced his Igbo middle name, 'Chinazaekpere',  to honor both his heritage and religious upbringing.

Speaking at his local church, Dorgu explained that 'Chinazaekpere' translates to 'God answers prayers', reflecting the importance of faith that has guided him since childhood.

"Religion means a lot to me, it’s always been a big part of my life and my family's. I’ve always been praying since I was young and I keep praying," Dorgu was quoted as saying by Manchester United's official website.

Dorgu credited his upbringing in Denmark, surrounded by family and community, with instilling values that influence both his personal life and professional career.

He continues to attend church whenever his schedule allows, emphasizing that maintaining this connection provides personal balance amid the demands of professional football.

Born in Copenhagen, Dorgu was reportedly on the radar of the Super Eagles coaching staff ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but ultimately committed to Denmark.
