'He mentioned' - Lesotho coach reveals what Eric Chelle told him after World Cup qualifier

There was a heartwarming moment captured on camera between between Nigeria coach Eric Chelle and his Lesotho counterpart Leslie Notsi following the Super Eagles' 2-1 victory over the Crocodiles in Friday's 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Polokwane, South Africa.

Nigeria started strongly, dominating possession and creating some chances, but the first half ended goalless.

Captain William Troost-Ekong eventually broke the deadlock from the penalty spot, before debutant Akor Adams doubled the lead with a fine finish in the 80th minute.

However, the momentum shifted after Nigeria's second goal as Lesotho increased their attacking intensity and pulled one back through Hompho Kalake.

The Crocodiles went close to equalising but were unable to convert their late chances.

Speaking after the game, Notsi revealed the words exchanged between him and Chelle during their post-match embrace.

"He mentioned after the game that we've got a good team, a very competitive and disciplined side tactically," Notsi told reporters at the post-match press conference.

"It's something we have to embrace and be humbled by, especially coming from a big team like Nigeria, a team that has qualified for the World Cup.

"For a coach to say that about Lesotho means a lot to us. It's something I’m going to share with the players, and we have to stay level-headed but put even more effort into our work."

Heading into the final matchday in Group C of the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, surprise leaders Benin sit top of the table with 17 points, followed by South Africa on 15 and Nigeria in third place with 14.

Lesotho, who are already out of contention for next year's tournament, will face the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Monday.
